Feb 12 1959 Donald Fairfax of Amherst, Nova Scotia became the first African Canadian to be appointed to a staff position with the Nova Scotia Legislature in its 200 year history.

Feb 11 1990– Nelson Mandela was released from a South African prison after being held for 27 years as a political prisoner.
